TWO BIRDS!

Holy smokes! The writers at Spin magazine must have been infiltrated by people with actual good taste in music recently. It's shocking really, in a rag that regularly services blow jobs to Panic! At The Disco or wait, is that Vampire Weekend on the cover (off one album, REALLY!?), emo bands (here's looking at you Andy Greenwald), and crappy 80's metal that most people only enjoy ironically (here's looking at you Klosterman), it's hope-affirming that a band like American Music Club could even get a review (no less a positive 3 and a half star one). Maybe McSweeny's was holding a party when the last issue went to press, who knows. But the only thing more shocking than the American Music Club write-up was the one right next to it for BRM's favorite old school indie-rockers, Antietam (grabbing a whopping and much deserved 4 stars for their seething new double (!) album). And hell, the only thing more shocking than these reviews appearing in the magazine responsible for birthing Ultragrrrl into the world (read: Don Hills), are just how pale Lohan's nipples are. Seriously, right!?!?!?

On the surface both AMC's The Golden Age (Merge), and Antietam's Opus Mixtum couldn't be more different; One, a modest sleepy, AM folk record that with strong appeal to dudes with more than a few Tom Waits records in their collections, the other, a sprawling double album of retro-inflected distorted guitar jam, wake the neighbors awesomeness, the kind of music Malkmus wishes he could play these days. Leave it to Spin to bring these two great tastes of BRM's newest sounds together.
