4th OF JULY FIREWORKS!

Posted by Hartley On Jul 3, 2008

well almost...

Jesus, does it look like Conor Oberst had the time of his life making his first record released under his own actual name. Lost in the Mexican desert or some such way over yonder place (Moab, perhaps?) with the boys in his "Mystic Valley Band", cutting vocals outdoors at night with the fireflies and crickets and spirits - it's no wonder the results have been on constant (and I mean CONSTANT) rotation at the BRM HQ. It's definitely the most focused work Conor has ever put out, and not coincidentally, his most consistent since I'm Wide Awake...The whole thing sounds organic, lots of acoustic guitars, and sparkling rhodes keyboards, and a home-y production that never gets in the way of these absolutely memorable songs.

Merge Records (home to M. Ward, Spoon, The Arcade Fire et al) will be putting out Conor Oberst this August. However, to hold you over until then, there's this wonderful 9-minute long, making-of-the-album viral clip with song snippets and stuff you definitely want to see - like shots of the "Mystic Valley Band" hiking through the mountains! It all leads me to think that maybe Conor should start a summer camp with his next between album-downtime. And fittingly for the 4th, the spot even opens with fireworks.  Fireworks!

Also, how freaking badass is the album art for this thing!?:
