BRM JULIES 101: A Primer In Julies

Posted by Hartley On Jul 23, 2008

There's two new "Julies" on the scene here at BRM HQ: Julie Ocean, and Julie Doiron. You'd be forgiven for mistaking one for the other - there are truly some fine similarities between these two awesome "Julies". Let's take a closer look, shall we?

On the one hand there's Julie Ocean - who believe it or not, are a band. Apparently, they are named after some seminal cult indie pop song that I can almost guarantee nobody reading this blog post will have actually heard, so it's no matter. In any event, Julie Ocean look like this:

The resemblance is uncanny, I know. And only making matters worse, the similarites are shocking, and plenty. Let's take a deeper look shall we?

1. Both Julies like to wear long-sleeve black shirts, with some sort of white t-shirt thing underneath.

2. Also, both Julies seem to like bangs.

3. While Julie Ocean write pop songs, Julie Doiron just writes songs.

4. While Julie Doiron's latest offering, Loneliest In The Morning, is an old record getting reissued, Julie Ocean are just old. (ed. note: sorry dudes)

5. Julie Ocean has kids - so those bros are never "lonely in the morning."

6. There's no song on the Julie Doiron record that has an electric guitar, there's no song on the Julie Ocean record that doesn't.

7. In the above pic, Julie Doiron, is thinking how messed up getting tasered must feel like. In actual reality, Julie Ocean's frontman, Jim, knows first hand how messed up getting tasered must feel like. (ed. note: you readers HAVE TO WATCH THIS LINK!)

8. Both of these Julies have ties to Sub Pop. Some of the dude/dudes in Julie Ocean were on Sub Pop's 90's group of yore, Velocity Girl, while the SP originally released this new Julie Doiron record!

9. Lastly, Julie Ocean and Julie Doiron's music is just too simliar sounding to be overlooked. Clearly, they were influences on one another. Check it out for yourself:

Here's Julie Ocean with "#1 Song" off of Long Gone And Nearly There out on Transit of Venus Records now:

And Julie Doiron's "So Fast" off of Loneliest In The Morning out on Jagjaguwar now:

And here's a JULIETASTIC MASH-UP!:
