EVERYBODY LOVES OKKERVIL RIVER!

album of the year????

It's true everybody is going bananas for the new Okkervil River record. At first, to me, The Stand Ins seemed more like a companion peice to last year's very awesome, The Stage Names. Not only was I duped by the similiar titles, but really how could the Okkervil boys deliver an album just-as-good-if-not-better in such record turn-around time!?!? Not unless they were the Kanye West's of the Austin indie rock scene could they accomplish a feat such as this one. Well, I was wrong. Indeed, The Stand Ins (Jagjaguwar), isn't only turning out to be a fine follow-up, but quite possibly the single best moment in the band's startling consistent discography.

This weekend alone The New York Times sang the album's praises comparing Okkervil frontman, Will Sheff, to the likes of Morrisey and David Byrne, and calling The Stand Ins one of the most anticipated albums to be released this fall. As if that weren't enough, this morning, The Stand In's, received a glowing "recommended" review on Pitchfork. Also, the fine bloggers at Stereogum LOVE the record as does the likes of The New Pornographers Carl Newman, and singer-songwriter du jour Bon Iver who both have youtube clips of live covers of tracks off the album.

And as a parting gift, here's The Stand In's first single, "Pop Lie," which The Times called "insistently catchy" - indeed, it is!:
