AN OPEN LETTER TO OUR FRIEND, JASON SCHWARTZMAN & "HIS PEOPLE"
Posted by Hartley On Jan 8, 2009

love this guy
So here's the scoop fellow Bank Robber Music blog readers, subscribers, livers, lovers and the like...A few weeks back Jason Schwartzman and "his people" called our headquarters. Now as even the most casual visitors of this fine blog can attest, Lyle and I have surely had our fair share of celebrity run-ins. Who can forget the time Peirce Brosnan called in from the set of the The Thomas Crown Affair 2 (ed note - not actual film) desperate to speak with the one and only Bon Iver and begging us to get Bon on the phone STAT. Or how about when the lovely Holly Hunter called us weighing her chances of getting an Arcade Fire song for her latest project. Lyle, who usually can get the medal for most grumpy cynical dude in our office enclave, melted all at once into an Albert Brooks-like sweaty nervous puppy in the trance of Miss Hunter's vetern actress spell. In Lyle's own word: "She's just so hard to say no to." Kinda like the "cookie man" in Noah Baumbach's Kicking And Screaming.
Well had I actually been in the office when Jason called, I would've had my nervous puppy-dog moment too. Anyone who knows me knows how I came this close to getting cast at Max in Rushmore, and if any other youthful fellow with a penchant for wearing suits with no shoes and socks and Paul McCartney's 70's gem, Ram, got the gig I woulda been bummed. But now we can all admit, Schwartzman delivered. PLUS - he's got immaculate taste in girlfriends - Selma Blair, ZOOEY DESCHANEL(if the bold type font wasn't a dead give-away, i'm a bit jealous over that one), and his music is awesome. The last Coconut Records ...er...record, was filled with ez breezy California pop, completely unpretentious, inviting, and memorable. To make a long story longer - we at the Bank Robber jumped when Schwartzman asked us to get "in" on the upcoming new Coconut Records album. They promised to send it to us. That was like a month ago.
WE STILL HAVE NOT RECEIVED IT. JASON WHY DO YOU TEASE US SO!? IF YOU ARE READING THIS PLEASE SEND US THE NEW ALBUM. WE WANT TO HEAR IT. WE WILL MAKE YOU BOATLOADS OF MONEY SO YOU CAN GO ON LAVISH VACATIONS ON THE FRENCH RIVIERA AND BUY A CLOSET FULL OF BALMAN SUITS.
Has anybody actually heard the record? Is it better than fellow-Bank Robber artist, Okkervil River's performance last night on Letterman that somehow still hasn't leaked to youtube. If someone finds it please post URL in the comments.
And I leave you all with a new song from Bon Iver...if only cuz it reminds me of of something off Paul McCartney's Ram and of course the anthem "West Coast" from Jason Schwartzman/Coconut Records OLD record:
Here's "Beach Baby" by Bon Iver:
Coconut Records' "West Coast":
