NEW JULIE DOIRON > NEW LIZ PHAIR

The latest Julie Doiron album looks like this:

face paint is indie

Titled I Can Wonder What You Did With You Day (Jagjaguwar), the record doesn't sound nearly as ruefully quirk-tastic as the cover art and title imply. In fact, much of Wonder miraculously sounds like Doiron's early Sub Pop "grunge" band Eric's Trip, and this "seminal" record from the estrogen vaults:

Sure there are some very literal, melancholy acoustic guitar-laden moments that scream trademark "Doiron" (though most people will probably think "Tailor" sounds a lot like Feist - which for the purposes of the Bank Robber is great!), much of Julie's new one is dusted in distortion and minimalist fractured retro 90's accompaniment. "Consolation Prize", with it's chugging guitars, and deadpan scorned lover vocals sounds like the kind of music Liz Phair would still be making if Liz Phair was still making good music. In other words, it's a totally awesome tune. Extra points for the super sarcastic Phair-like chorus lyrics: "People insisted on telling you / what a great couple you had been / they insisted on telling you over and over again."

Check out "Consolation Prize" off of Julie Doiron's I Can Wonder What You Did With Your Day out now on Jagjaguwar:
