ARMY NAVY MAKE ANOTHER GREAT VIDEO SENDING UP THE PROCESS OF MAKING GREAT VIDEOS

Posted by Hartley On Apr 24, 2009

these dudes amuse me

There is definitely a discernible "cool" indie sound -unfortunately the awesome dudeman's in Army Navy don't have it. The Army Navy "sound" has no warbly yodeling-friendly vocals a la Neutral Milk Hotel or Will Oldham. There's no odd-time signatures, preppy-world music percussion, and faux-kenyan rhythms like Vampire Weekend and the zillion bands that want to sound like Vampire Weekend. Army Navy don't have beards. They aren't folky or even "freaks." Plus, they come from LA so you really have to tip your hat to the fact that none of their songs sound "psychedelic."

What Army Navy does have is plain old awesome guitar-bass-and-drums "chops." They play probably what my mother thinks is the type of music I listen to. It's melodic, and poppy, and jangly, with lots of guitars and big drums and vaguely whiny vocals. At least that's what my dad might say. He might say: "why does this lead singer sound like he's always crying". No matter. It's music made for skinny white dudes by skinny white dudes. And it's no surprise that as 2009 goes on I find myself falling more and more in love with the pretention-free power-pop of Army Navy's selftitled debut (In The Red) in the face of all the lo-fi noise weirdo blog shit (see: Wavvvvvvvves) that the kids are blindly eating up these days.

In other words, Army Navy write really really great songs. Dare I call them "fun" songs. Sometimes they make really funny vidoes for these great, fun songs like they did in the past for "My Thin Sides" (posted below) and more recently with "Saints" above. Check 'em out. They may not be "hip" but god are they f'ing great.
