EVERYTHING OLD IS NEW AGAIN THE SEQUEL: Dinosaur Jr. / Superchunk
Posted by Hartley On May 7, 2009

This is really the cover of the new Dinosaur Jr. record...like seriously.
Continuing off last week's now-classic post schooling you cats on the new/old sounds of Japanese collage-popster, Cornelius - everything old is new again...well...again. This time it seriously must be 1992 because hold onto your hats folks, this quarter the Bank Robber not only has the pleasure of working a new album from Dinosaur Jr (original line-up!), but an ep of new material from Superchunk to boot (!). Scary to think it was more than a decade ago, when highschool "me" was religiously watching 120 Minutes - fighting to keep my eyes open for at least 93 minutes of it, when I became totally smitten with Superchunk's "Driveway to Driveway" video. I picked up the accompanying album, Foolish, the very next day and subsequently met my new favorite band up until the summer after senior year when I went through my tropicalia phase.
As for the Dino J - I didn't need Mtv. to school my ass. I knew I loved Pavement - well, everyone I told this was always like "yo, go back and check out Dinosaur Jr. maaaaan. That's the awesome real indie rock shit. Mascis maaaan. Best guitar player ever." And you know what, to this day, perhaps there's something to that. Stigma be damned, around the BRM HQ J. Mascis is our favorite guitar player ever. No one has ever used a wah-wah pedal more scorchingly effective and less cheesy. No one else can take something that we loathe in music like soloing and make us actually second guess our distate for it. For these reasons and plenty more (including his eternally long ass hair), J Mascis is our hero. Oh, and also he plays on the new Jeff Lewis record and gets a f'ing trancendent distortion sound.
So yeah - as the title of this post makes clear - both these seminal indie forefathers are back. Superchunk's new ep is called, Leaves In The Gutter (Merge), and after a bazillion records you cats don't need me to tell you what it sounds like...it sounds like classic 'chunk. Shredding guitar hooks, some songs that make you want to pogo-dance. Other songs that make you all wistful - with sludgy tempos and memorable melodies and Mac's trademark pseudo-helium-laced vocals. Word is the band made this ep so they'd have something new to play along with their cadre of hits when they tour this summer. Great idea. Some bands never get old - Leaves is proof.
Farm (Jagjaguwar) is the first release from the original line-up of Dinosaur Jr. in forever. They are back with a new label too - the very fine, Jagjaguwar. Lou Barlow is also back in the house and he delivers two of the most memorable songs he's written - ever. Not to be outdone Sir J. sounds as gloriously bummed and cynical as ever - which is really saying something considering he's now happily married with kids and his old band is back in action - you'd think he'd be writing songs that sound like a Ringo Starr solo record. But no. Thank god. Just classic Dino shredding stoner jams.
Here's a clip of Dinosaur Jr. in the lab making Farm (out this June, but hit us for tracks and we will give you sups a sneak peak shhhhh!):
And here's Superchunk with "Learned To Surf" off Leaves In The Gutter (Merge):
