EVERYTHING, AND THE GIRL TOO

Everyone's father has a mustache. What's up with that!?

You may remember Tracey Thorn as the sultry chick who with husband/collaborator Ben Watt formed the 90's trip-hop(ish) duo, Everything But The Girl. Yeah. They sang that song, "Missing," that's probably on one of those NOW THAT'S WHAT I CALL MUSIC comps right about now. It was a dope enough song. Some solid remixes too. I very clearly remember one of those remixes being played while 15 year old me was getting my hair ill-conceivably cut by someone unfortunately named "Butterfly" who I shudder to call a "stylist" at Dramatics - a place my father once told me was "where all the cool kids get their hair cut." Thanks dad.  EBTG had a bunch of other jams too. Some folks that love electronic music probably would call the duo "seminal" - that word is a bit too big for me. However, along with Portishead and Lamb, EBTG definitely fulfilled my need for quality "downtempo" make-out music. God, I miss highschool.

Anyways, no the Bank Robber hasn't started working EBTG. However, we are super excited about the new Tracey Thorn solo joint somewhat bleakly titled, Love And It's Opposite, that Merge is about to drop on the world. Featuring Swedish pop wunderkind, Jens Lekman, and even a member of Hot Chip, Thorn has managed to make a melancholy classic a few decades into her professional career. Considering her debut solo record came out in 1982, and it took her 27 years to follow it up with another one in 2007 - let's rejoice that this album took less than a decade to make! It's an arrestingly beautiful downer of an album that keeps calling back to you. The kind of record that hipsters and moms ordering Venti Skinny Vanilla Lattes at Starbucks will both break bread over. The first track is titled, "Oh, The Divorces!" I like to think of it as the love child of Bill Callahan and Cat Power. Prozac sold separately. You take my point.

There is one "upbeat" song on Love...It's called "Why Does The Wind?" Personally Tracey, I don't know the answer to that question. But hey music supervisors, take a listen, and perhaps you will! Also, it sounds nice.
