Hey there BRM blog readers. This is Andy Gowan, music supervisor on the opening-today-so-you-better-go-see-it Sundance-darling indie romantic dramedy HappyThankYouMorePlease. writing a few lines on how some awesome BRM songs ended up in the movie (thanks again Lyle!).

Early in the movie Sam (Josh Radnor) goes to a party at his friend Annie's place. We wanted the party to have a feeling of accessible cool but not too cool (none of that hipper than thou judgemental B.S.) These are just some cool New Yorkers with taste having a good time. We played around with a lot of songs here - from classic 60's soul to current indie rock and when we hit on The Generationals "When They Fight, They Fight" we knew we had a winner. It had the perfect combination of everything we were looking for wrapped up all in one fun sweet singalong gem of a tune.

Fan video:

We used 3 other BRM jams in a sequence midway through the movie where we cut back and forth between two different couples having two very different nights at two different bars. We wanted the music to help differentiate the juxtaposition of Sam's hopeful flirtatious getting to know you romantic rendezvous with Mississippi with that of Annie's experience of meeting up with her old bad boy flame, Ira. Blunt Mechanic's "Thrown Out At Third" sneaks, creeps, and struts into the meet up with Ira:

Next up is "Arms Like Boulders" by War On Drugs:

Third is Throw Me the Statue's "Waving At the Shore":

All three playing on the dubious battle Annie faces against backsliding with a man she knows will once again disappoint and hurt her.

So I hope everyone rushes out to see this movie and enjoys it as much as I enjoyed working on it. Special shout out to Jaymay - go see the movie and you'll know why. And watch How I Met Your Mother, 8pm Monday CBS.

Thanks for reading!

-Andy Gowan
