Dispatches from Park City

So the Bank Robber returns from Park City: 1 blizzard, 2 run-ins with Jesse Pinkman (Smashed's Aaron Paul), 3 unsuccessful attempts to wait list into films, and a dozen or so hours of standing in line in the freezing cold later.  And while BRM music is heavily represented in this year's crop of Sundance films including festival favorite Save the Date, a hefty scene for Small Black in Nobody Walks, For A Good Time Call..., Excision, Safety Not Guaranteed, and of course Jagjaguwar's provocative film The Comedy among many others, we can't help but think we could have done a little bit better.

For starters, may we suggest that Chasing Ice -- 2012's update of An Inconvenient Truth that chronicles photographer James Balog's journey to document climate change in the form of melting glaciers -- could have benefited from the use of Yellow Ostrich's (Barsuk) newest ear worm "Marathon Runner"  (Seriously though, go see Chasing Ice when you can -- it's a stunner, as is the new Yellow Ostrich album!).

Not to mention the total missed opportunity to feature Brooklyn's Hospitality (Merge) in a film called The L Train!  No brainer.  Check out the new video for "Friends of Friends" and ask us for the (Pitchfork approved) full album.

And apparently there was a film at Sundance called Violeta Went to Heaven.  I know absolutely nothing about this film and didn't make it to the premiere.  I did catch the premiere of the new Eleanor Friedberger (Merge) video for her song "Heaven." The best part of this premiere?  No freezing on line for an hour and a half.  Click it up... instead of lining up!

Also at Sundance this year was our own Fat Cat recording artist Johann Johannson, who scored the much lauded competition feature For Ellen.   And speaking of Johann and Fat Cat, forget what you know about labelmates Twilight Sad.  The Scottish band is now citing bands such as PiL, Can, and Liars as inspiration for their next full length album, trading the wall of sound guitars for a darker landscape thick with synthesizers.  We dig it.  Check the video for the new single "Another Bed."

That's it for this year's festival wrap up...now back to the hot tub!
