Vol. 4 Issue 21 September 2007

Poor Owen Wilson! He obviously didn't check out our new and improved BRM website before attempting to check out himself. The new Okkervil River jam alone is a life-saver...and I'm not even gonna mention our awesome new blog, which is located directly to the right of this sentence. Yep, if there's anything that can help get Wilson's life back on track it's new albums from Rogue Wave, Mum, and The Shout Out Louds. Be well, dear friend.

Spoon picture

Spoon

"Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga"

Um...new Spoon anyone!?

What can anyone really say about Spoon at this point? The greatest band like ever. Ever. And Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga (Merge), though, insanely titled just may be their best or at least second best record. Needless to say, we absolutely love the horns. Really - it’s like Billy Joel gone good on jams like "The Underdog," and "You Got Yr Cherry Bomb." Plus, "The Ghost of You Lingers" is all very Kraftwerkian in a Postal Service way - which should be making you supervisors swoon right about now. And then after those three cuts - there's still like 7 others that just sound like classic Spoon. Album of the year?

Shout Out Louds picture

Shout Out Louds

"Our Ill Wills"

Confirming that the Swedes just do indie-pop better than anyone - Merge's own Shout Out Louds have delivered one doozy of a record with, Our Ill Wills. My first reaction upon hearing Wills' single, "Impossible," was: "Hey, is this some amazing lost Go-Betweens B-side!?" It’s all very airy-and spacey in that 80's shoegaze c-86 pop sort of way - and I swear they love these chorus-heavy muted guitars as much as Phil Collins does(not a bad thing). Who knew Tears for Fears would become such a seminal influence in 2007?

Imperial Teen picture

Imperial Teen

"The Hair, The TV, The Baby, And The Band"

For years I only knew Imperial Teen as that other band that featured a former member of Faith No More. Not necessarily the best introduction to a group, Lyle just dubbed: "The B-52's of 2007." He's not all wrong. The Hair, the TV, the Baby, and the Band (Merge), Imperial Teen's first album in 5 years, is brimming with totally enjoyable campy guy-girl fronted pop songs with titles like "Shim Sham," and "Sweet Potato." In the profoundly infectious lyrics to "One Two" - this is one record you "ooooh, gotta get."

Caribou picture

Caribou

"Andorra"

BRM's favorite psych-rock electronic experimentalist is back! Dan Snaith aka has a killer new record, Andorra, and a new label (Merge), but still the same awesome dudes pitching his jams out to music supervisors (Bank Robber, duh!). Andorra just may be Caribou's masterwork - it-s got his trademark "kaleidoscope" Technicolor grandeur, but all the while Snaith's pop songwriting instincts have never been sharper. In other words, it's good music to smoke pot too and sing a long with! Also, for all of you that manage to wear black head to toe in the summer time without breaking the slightest of a sweat, the Junior Boys' Jeremy Greenspan guests on Andorra-stand-out, "She's The One."

New Young Pony Club picture

New Young Pony Club

"Fantastic Playroom"

You may know New Young Pony Club without even realizing it. The group's irresistable electro-funk jam, "Ice Cream" has been everywhere from Ipod and HP ads to Entourage. It's more ubiquitous than Ari Gold's blackberry. And now, finally, you can hear more. Fantastic Playroom (Modular) is NYPC's debut and even Pitchfork is falling over itself in acclaim. The fine folks at XL8R (worst name for a magazine ever.), infamously called NYPC "the traded up little sister The Slits never had and the naughty girlfriend the Tom Tom Club always wanted." Whatever that means. The record is great. Listen.

Rogue Wave picture

Rogue Wave

"Asleep At Heaven's Gate"

Rogue Wave were never an "indie" band per say. Their brand of ultra-smart lush melodramatic pop always flirted very closely to populist anthem-territory; and never has this penchant for big hooks that everyone can connect with been more present than on the band's brand new third jam/debut for Brushfire Records (Jack Johnson's new label), Asleep At Heaven’s Gate. Sparkling guitars swirl, thick harmony-layered vocals deliver one huge familiar hook after another - it'd all be blissful "guilty pleasure" territory, had Rogue not already built their rep on one of the classiest Indie label's around, Sub Pop. It's all enough to make me wish their was a sequel to Garden State, just so half the songs off this record could carry the soundtrack. A boy can dream.

Okkervil River picture

Okkervil River

"The Stage Names"

Austin, Tx's 2nd most acclaimed band (Austin's first opened this here compilation!), Okkervil River, have just delivered the record of their career. Following on the rapturous critically acclaimed, Black Sheep Boy, The Stage Names is louder, rowdier, and just more epic in general. It's got that whole big retro Springsteen sound that seems to be so popular right now (see: new records from The Arcade Fire, Hold Steady, and The Killers). However, Okkervil indulge their working-for-the-man meets Phil Spector ambitions, without losing a smidgeon of intimacy. Meet our new favorite office jam: "Unless It's Kicks."

The Fiery Furnaces picture

The Fiery Furnaces

"Widow City"

After releasing some cryptic, enigmatic records for Rough Trade and Fat Possum, The Fiery Furnaces have now found a new home on Chicago's premier indie rock emporium/BRM lifer, Thrill Jockey Records. Widow City marks the TJ debut, and the peripatetic brother/sister duo have never done more to channel their McCartney influence through the psychedelic sound shredder. They've always marched to the beat of their own drum...who knows what they've got hidden in there. Another twisted puzzle-pop classic from which "Ex-Guru" is a stand-out.

Múm picture

Múm

"Go Go Smear The Poison Ivy"

Nobody does super-intimate in the world of "electronic" music like Múm. Seriously. "Hushed" doesn't even begin to cut it when capturing the Icelandic groups collection of blips and bleeps and bells and whistles and whispers. Múm's latest, Go Go Smear The Poison Ivy, (Fat Cat) is first Múm jam in quite a while, and it comes at a time when the kids have just about had it replaying that Sigur Ros album and pretending it was Múm. Go Go is definitely more song-oriented than Múm is known for - however - don't expect any anthem-worthy chorus'...remember..."hushed." That said, what Go Go lacks in anthems it makes up for wondrous, otherwordly dramatics. Another alluring, strange record from Iceland.

Patrick Park picture

Patrick Park

"Everyone’s In Everyone"

Holy ghost of Elliott Smith! With his second album, Everyone's In Everyone, Patrick Park has delivered something of a singer-songwriter gem. Park's name is nowhere near as familiar to you as it should be - the "intelligentsia" know what's up though - Park was discovered by indie-producer extrordinaire Dave Trumfio whose worked with everyone from Wilco to Ok Go. Trumfio produced Everyone with help from Elliott Smith producer and pal, Rob Schnapf, and Chris Stamey! So, a lot of talented people believe in this kid, and as "Time For Moving On," so deftly demonstrates it's for good reason.
