Various Artists "Eccentric Soul Vol. 20: The Saru Label (The Numero Group)"
For the 20th volume of their esteemed Eccentric Soul series, our pals at The Numero Group turn their ears towards the gritty sounds of Cleveland and The Saru Label. The rust belt grit of “The Cleve” practically flakes off of each of these hard-working tunes. The label was started by the O’Jays Bobby Massey, and each of these tunes makes a strong case for Cleveland being as important as Detroit and Philly, soul-wise. Are the songs a little creaky? A little off-key occasionally? Sure. Are they also great? Yup, they sure are. Take for instance the song “Son In Law,” which definitely should have been the theme song for a show of the same name starring Demond Wilson that would have fallen between his stints as Lamont Sanford on Sanford and Sonand his stint as Oscar Madison on 1983’s The New Odd Couple.
