"Goths"
To paraphrase the great Bruce McCulloch, The Doors have no bass and The Mountain Goats have no guitar. But don’t let that scare you, my friend, let that liberate you! That’s right! Goths (Merge), the new album from The Mountain Goats, features exactly zero guitars. It does, however, feature choral arrangements, hyper-literate lyrics from John Darnielle (as well as some tasty Fender Rhodes playing). The Mountain Goats are a difficult band to describe musically, as they have as singular a sound as there is. Plus, you already know what they sound like. So just check out the goth-esque lead-off track, “Rain In SOHO.”
